CORFU. High number of recorded Covid cases on first day back at school.

There was a high number of recorded Covid cases amongst pupils and teachers following the two-week break for Christmas and New Year.

According to the Ionian Islands Regional Education Department, there are 40 primary school pupils and 28 teachers who are Covid positive.

The numbers were even greater in secondary schools, with 139 cases amongst pupils and 17 amongst teachers.

It should be noted, however, that the number of teachers includes not only those who tested positive just before the beginning of the new term, but also those who were already in isolation and whose quarantine will end in the next few days.

According to Regional Education Director Petros Aggelopoulos, steps have been taken to cover the gaps left by teachers with coronavirus, so that the daily programme can run smoothly.

According to the Corfu Regional Department, where necessary, adjustments have been made to the programme so that lessons will not be missed.

Nevertheless, a few schools may not be able to conduct all lessons and the daily timetable will end one hour earlier.
