CORFU. No problems as pupils returned to school today.

Ionian Islands Regional Director of Education Petros Aggelopoulos told Enimerosi that the first day of the new school term in Corfu went smoothly this morning. Despite the issue with the availability of self tests, there were no problems as pupils came back to school. "The return of pupils to school went smoothly, without any problems," said Mr. Aggelopoulos.

From Sunday evening Corfu Primary and Secondary Education Departments distributed self tests to schools that had run out of stock so that there were enough available if needed for pupils and teachers. According to the Primary Education Department, approximately 100 self tests were distributed.

28 teachers positive for Covid

According to Mr. Aggelopoulos, steps have been taken to cover the gaps left by teachers with coronavirus, so that the daily programme can run smoothly. A total of 28 teachers have been recorded as Covid positive.

It should be made clear, however, that this number includes not only those who tested positive just before the beginning of the new term, but also those who were already in isolation and whose quarantine will end in the next few days. According to the Corfu Regional Department, where necessary, adjustments were made to the programme so that lessons would not be missed.

Nevertheless, a few schools may not be able to conduct all lessons and the daily timetable will end one hour earlier.

Shortage of self tests

Corfu Pharmaceutical Association President Mr. Stamatakos told Enimerosi that there was a shortage of self tests mainly at pharmacies in Corfu Town due to increased demand. "The period for people to get self tests, Wednesday-Saturday, was very short and not everybody had been informed," he said. "Along with the few open pharmacies, this led to a shortage."
