CORFU. A total of 97km of roads will be repaired in Central Corfu – Where there will be a complete repair of the main and subsidiary road network.

The first Regional Authority major roadworks project – the Tzavros-Paleokastritsa Road and connecting roads in Central Corfu – is ready to move from the planning stage to implementation, as yesterday afternoon the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa signed the contract with the project’s contractor, in the presence of the Corfu Deputy Regional Governor Kostas Zorbas and the Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure and Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis.

The work, which has a budget of €4,577,400, will maintain and repair the main and subsidiary road network in Central Corfu, which is the responsibility of the Corfu Regional Authority. “We are happy to announce this project to Corfu citizens and the tourism bodies, because the improvement of the road network is essential for the quality of life, safety, tourism development and the image of the island.

Today we are starting with the signing of the contract for Central Corfu. With this project, 40% of the road network will be repaired and we are expecting another project of about €900,000. We are also waiting for the major road safety project that will fill all the gaps and provide what a modern road network needs.

Unfortunately, we are also lacking in basic infrastructure, which is why we are very satisfied with the road network improvement project, which will be supplemented by other projects relating to road safety. A 32-million project for the whole Region – of which €10 million are for Corfu – is already included in the Recovery Fund, which will change the image of our island,” said the Regional Governor. She thanked the responsible Deputy Regional Governor Mr. Orphanoudakis, the former Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Melita Andrioti, as she started the tender process for the project, and Mr. Zorbas for the project’s final implementation.

The work to be done

According to the study done, the work will include resurfacing, repairing potholes and subsidence, improving gradients etc. It will also include ensuring proper flood defences and all necessary technical works such as support walls, kerbs, proper drainage etc.

There will also be work done to ensure road safety - safety barriers, road markings, road signage and pavements. This €4.5-million project concerns the basic work that needs to be done, in order to improve both traffic conditions and the condition of the main and subsidiary road network in Central Corfu.

It should be noted that the total length of the roads in Central Corfu is 97km, of which 40% will be repaired.

“This project will complement the Ministry’s €10-million road safety study and there will be about €900,000 for another project for Central Corfu. It is a project that started in 2019 with a registration, which became a study and then a tender in 2021. The project is set to be completed in 18 months and our goal is to speed up the procedures so that it is ready within a year,” said Mr. Orphanoudakis. He also stressed that the Ionian Islands Region’s planning is €18 million for road projects, €10 million for road safety projects from the Ministry and €3 million for maintenance work planned for 2022.
