CORFU. Thousands of non-Covid patients are on the waiting list for surgery. Joint statement from Corfu Hospital and Psychiatric Employees Unions.
Statement:
Thousands of patients have been condemned to a serious degrading of their standard of life - Hospitals must be reinforced immediately
Two years later and the situation is just the same again. By decision of the Deputy Health Minister Ms. Gaga, hospitals have been asked to reduce the number of operations by up to 80%. The decision comes at a time when hospitals still haven't recovered from the previous similar decision.
With the Covid pandemic in full force and with dozens of daily deaths once again, the pandemic of non-Covid deaths seems to be becoming just as deadly.
Thousands of patients are on hospital waiting lists with no prospect in sight for operations for chronic health problems. They are condemned to a serious degrading of their standard of life or are being pushed out to the private sector for their operations.
Who doesn't remember the increased profits at private clinics from operations that couldn't be done at public hospitals during the previous spike in the pandemic?
It's time for the public hospitals to be immediately reinforced with the necessary staff. Auxiliary staff must be given permanent contracts. The suspension of approximately 7,000 health workers must be lifted and they should come back to work with 2-3 rapid tests a week. The private health sector must also immediately start contributing to the fight against the pandemic. There must be no postponement of National Health System operations, which have already been reduced in number.
