CORFU. Deputy Regional Governor says, "Bulldozers will begin work in February."

Following significant delays, Ionian Islands Regional Authority will begin to resurface the worn-out road network across the island at a cost of approximately €18m. According to the Regional Authority's plan, over 200km of the main roads will be resurfaced out of a total of 500km on the island.

Beginning in Central Corfu

Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure and Technical Works Manolis Orfanoudakis told Enimerosi that the first work to be contracted out will be for the Tzavros-Paleokastritsa Road and connecting roads (€4,577,400), which will be contracted out in the coming days - early December at the latest - and the other works will be gradually contracted out until the end of January.

"The €18m is funding that had been held by the previous Regional Authority but no studies had been carried out," Mr. Orfanoudakis told Enimerosi. "The present Regional Authority immediately completed the studies and put the work out to tender. The contracts will soon be signed. We have also included another significant project - the complete reconstruction of the traffic light network with a new remote control system, new cables and circuit boards as there is huge problem with the current boards, which keep burning out."

Resurfacing of 45-50% of road network

This is an extremely important project for Corfu and will significantly improve the roads with the resurfacing of a large part of the 500km network.

Manolis Orfanoudakis said that the five contracts will resurface over 200km, which is approximately 45-50% of the Regional road network. He added that the sections to be resurfaced will be 200m - 1km in length.

12 - 18 months

According to the Regional Authority's plan, the work on the first project is expected to begin in December and the bulldozers will begin work in February. If the contracts for the other projects are signed by the end of January, work will also begin on those.

The completion of the projects is expected to be within 12-18 months after the signing of the contracts. Mr. Orfanoudakis pointed out, however, that because they are major works, they will be completed in stages, stopping for the tourist season in the summer and continuing afterwards. Other work will be carried out in the summer which won't affect traffic.
