CORFU. The rain is now directly threatening human lives – The community must take action along with the authorities.
Deputy Regional Governor for Civil Protection Nikos Miliotis spoke at a press conference held on Tuesday about the actions of the army team and the conclusions of the inspections.
Nikos Miliotis spoke right after Major General Michail Klouvas and sent ‘warning signals’ to the local community. Deputy Governor said that, with the assistance of the army, they will all work hard, but it is necessary that the community also takes action.
In particular, Nikos Miliotis stated the following:
As the Civil Protection and having the responsibility for the entire Region, regarding what Corfu experienced during the two disastrous storms, it is worth noting that one year’s rain fell in Corfu in just four days. More than 340,000 litres of water per acre in two days. This destroyed Central and South Corfu and caused floodings.
The main problem and the greatest challenge, when it comes to Civil Protection, is the prevention of danger to life due to flooding. Above all, however, it is an urgent need for the society. To put it more simply: People will drown next time. In the fully urban and fully exploited by the tourism industry or the businesses areas of Central Corfu, where more than 75,000 people live, there will be death next time. The rain is now directly threatening human lives.
We will not be looking to put the blame on anyone.
We, as a Region, aim to work with the Civil Protection Mechanism – a mechanism that does not have a lot of people available, but has a lot of resources and machinery. 45 machines have started and will continue to work on the short-term relief of the affected areas. A permanent solution will be provided by what the Major General has just described as a technical service with well-trained staff and by the efforts that the Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure has made.
In conclusion, I would like to say that we will call not only on the authorities, not only on those of us who are responsible, not only on those of us who are at fault, but I will call on all Corfu community members, who are listening to us, to look at their own issues and contribute to the overall effort.
