CORFU. The study foresees the complete decarbonisation of the autonomous electricity systems of the islands of Erikoussa and Othoni, as well as the development of a “smart marina” on the island of Mathraki.

Deputy Mayor for European Programmes, Development and Digital Governance Panayiota Tzanne attended the 1st Workshop on “Clean Energy for the EU Islands”, as part of the approved proposal submitted by the Central Corfu Municipality for the clean energy transition of the Diapontia Islands.

The Workshop was organised by the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving and the Clean Energy for EU Islands Network and was attended by distinguished representatives of these networks, as well as representatives of Local Authorities within the framework of their relevant proposals and suggestions.

It should be noted that the proposal, which has been approved for the Central Corfu Municipality, concerns the preparation of a study for the clean energy transition of the Diapontia Islands, a proposal which was submitted by the Municipality, with the support of the Network of Sustainable Greek Islands (DAFNI), to the European funding mechanism New Energy Solutions Optimized for Islands (NESOI).

It should also be reminded that a total of 117 proposals had been submitted from all European countries with islands, 28 of which were approved for direct funding. The Central Corfu Municipality’s proposal had received a score of 18.5/20, ranking it first in Europe.

The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality obtained funding of €60,000 for the preparation of studies, as well as technical support of an equal amount from the NESOI management bodies.

The proposed study foresees the complete decarbonisation of the autonomous electricity systems of the islands of Erikoussa and Othoni, as well as the development of a “smart marina” on the island of Mathraki.

For the implementation of the projects, it is planned to study the possibility of creating an Energy Community with the participation of the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality – and possibly the Public Power Corporation (DEI) – as well as with the possibility of natural and legal entities from the islands to participate as well.

More specifically, the interventions in the islands concern:

Decarbonisation of the Diapontia Islands

The Diapontia Islands of Erikoussa & Othoni are not interconnected with the mainland electricity transmission system and are autonomous electricity systems with very high cost of electricity generation and increased greenhouse gas emissions. The proposed project envisages the creation of a hybrid power plant on each island consisting of a combination of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and storage of the energy produced in locations that the Municipality and the residents will jointly select.
