CORFU. In-person training and demonstration of special training equipment by the Ionian University Informatics Department as part of the cross-border E-Horeca Wanet programme.

The Ionian University Informatics Department conducted an "in-person practical exercise and demonstration of special training equipment with Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands refuse truck drivers" as part of the cross-border E-Horeca Wanet programme (Interreg IPA II Greece-Albania) which aims to create innovative and efficient Corfu restaurant, catering and hotel waste management.

The cross-border E-Horeco Wanet programme "Efficient Hotel Restaurant & Catering Waste Network" is part of the Interreg IPA II Cross- border cooperation programme Greece - Albania 2014-2020.

The programme is co-funded by EU via the European Regional Development Fund and the two member states Albania and Greece.

The training had two stages: the theoretical part took place online and the practical part took place outside the Municipal Technical Works Department with Smart Drive Ltd's "Prototype Mobile Centre for Research and Training for Safe Transportation, Construction and Mining". The mobile centre includes a lorry and bus simulator, special software and interactive tools for experiential training. A second heavy machinery simulator gave participants the opportunity to work with machinery used for collection-transportation-processing.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou observed the training of drivers and the demonstration of the simulation equipment with keen interest and said that similar projects need to be conducted for the benefit of municipal workers and the local community.

Present at the training were Dr. Markos Avlonitis, Scientific Supervisor for E-Horeca Wanet and Informatics Department lecturer, and Supervisor of the Municipal Waste Management Department Andreas Lavranos. Smart Drive Ltd Director Chrysoula Merka thanked all those who attended for their exemplary response and for observing all the Covid safety measures.
