CORFU. Taking advantage of a lull, a fire simulation exercise was conducted at Gouvia Marina today.

The exercise was to help train personnel in dealing with a fire at the marina.

The exercise was led by director Konstantinos Karabatsos and was supervised by Fire Chief Nikos Kolovos along with Central Corfu Civil Protection Service and Corfu Harbourmaster Kostas Beretoulis.

"The exercise used a scenario with a high degree of difficulty and it went well," said Mr. Karabatsos. "A point was chosen which couldn't be reached by the Fire Department water supply so that we could practise the immediate response to the fire until firefighters arrived. Once the firefighters arrive, they take over and we provide assistance."

"Fire simulation exercises play an important role in providing practical training," Fire Chief Nikos Kolovos told Enimerosi. "Possible problems need to be encountered in the exercises in order to avoid panic and mistakes in a real situation." He said that a joint exercise with marina personnel and firefighters will soon be conducted.

Following the extinguishing of the fire, there was an exercise in preventing pollution with a floating barrier being placed around the boat to prevent fuel spreading in the sea.
