Filming for the much-awaited film "Capodistrias" directed by Yiannis Smaragdis is ready to go ahead. The film is a fictional biography of the great Greek politician Ioannis Capodistrias and hopes to be a work which is conciliatory and optimistic.

The director of the successful films Kavafis, El Greco, God Loves Caviar and Kazantzakis aims to highlight the great and unknown personality of Ioannis Capodistrias and his importance not only in Greek, but also European, civilisation. It is a film about a person that everyone 'knows of' but does not really 'know'. It also aims to "colour his soul" and highlight the the red thread of his persistence and mainly to show the significance of his "sacrifice".

Filming will begin in early 2022, by which time the funding of the film will be settled.

The filming will take place in Corfu, Nafplion, Aegina, Hydra, Mani, Poros, Sounion and Epidauros as well as Geneva and Lausanne in Switzerland and St. Petersburg in Russia, where Capodistrias was appointed Foreign Minister by Tsar Alexander I, with whom he had an impartial friendship.

The film also seeks to 'seal' the programme of events for 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution just as it is universally accepted that Capodistrias was the seal on the Greek Revolution.

Ioannis Capodistrias will be played by Michalis Sarantis and the roles of Kolokotroni, Kountouriotis, Mavromichalis, Spiliadis, Kanaris, Mavrokordatos and others will be played by distinguished Greek actors.

Russian actors will play the roles of Tsar Alexander I, Tsarina Elisavet, Tsar Nikolas I, the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin and Capodistrias' great love Roxandra Sturdza. Swiss actors will play the roles of Swiss philhellenes.

The film is a co-production between Greece, Russia and Switzerland.

The production company is Alexandros Film Co. Ltd and the film will be distributed in Greece and Cyprus by Audio Visual AE, who also distributed Kazantzakis.

The film is expected to be released in Autumn 2022 and 4 premieres are being planned in Athens, Moscow, Geneva and New York.
