CORFU. "We can΄t keep up!" said the head of the local ambulance service (EKAB).
A road accident in Corfu in the summer is hardly big news - especially if there are only minor injuries. What is of concern, however, is when, due to the workload, the ambulance can't get there quickly.
This particular accident happened on Eth. Pelekas Rd at Triklino at 17:10 yesterday. A motorcyclist was involved in an accident with a car and both he and his passenger were thrown onto the road.
The ambulance took more than half-an-hour to arrive at the scene to take the two injured people to the hospital.
"We can΄t keep up!" said the head of the local ambulance service (EKAB). There are few vehicles and only 34 personnel for 3 shifts on a 24-hour basis on an island which has perhaps three times its normal population at this time of the year!
To add to this, from this coming week unvaccinated health workers will be suspended - making the situation even more difficult.
