CORFU. The Association of Solari Residents, Professionals & Businesspeople did not want to close the road, but several businesspeople did it on their own initiative, blocking traffic for a short time.

Solari businesspeople, who gathered in the area on Tuesday morning, are protesting against the decision of the Ionian Islands Regional Administration to prohibit stopping and parking along the side of the road leading to town.

The Association of Solari Residents, Professionals & Businesspeople was planning to gather at the side of the road and the pavement, without blocking the traffic.

However, several businesspeople symbolically blocked the road for a few minutes on their own initiative. A representative of the Association stressed that the blockade was not their decision.

The reason why all the businesses are protesting is that the decision to prohibit parking will prevent access to their businesses and will result in their closure. They are asking the Regional Authority to declassify the road from a highway and address the issue of traffic congestion fully and not partially.

The Association has met over the last few days with a number of political and business organisations, in order to make the problems known to the community – especially the Ionian Islands Regional Administration, which is responsible for Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd.

Alexandra Ballou, leader of the ‘Laiki Sispirosi’ party, was also present at the protest.

It is worth noting that in the morning and during the protest there was no Traffic Police in the area.
