CORFU. Latest update on the Special Infectious Diseases Unit and the ICU.

The Special Infectious Disease Unit at Corfu Hospital is nearing its limit as, despite patients being discharged, new admissions continue.

The condition of many of the patients may not be very serious but, nevertheless, there is concern as public health facilities remain under pressure.

Today, Wednesday, there are 23 patients hospitalised in the Unit, one of whom is a tourist - another tourist was discharged yesterday.

Amongst the patients is a 62-year-old unvaccinated man from Paxos, who was brought to Corfu yesterday. Another woman was also brought from Paxos yesterday but didn't need to be admitted to the hospital after all.

Out of the 23 patients only 2 are vaccinated.

The number of available beds can be counted on one hand and the hospital has expressed its concern - it is considered very likely that matters will get worse in September. The hospital is ready to extend the Unit if necessary, using a section of the Pulmonary Clinic.

There are no patients in the ICU today.

A total of 35 tourists are being accommodated at the quarantine hotels at the moment - those who have tested positive for Covid-19 and their close contacts. There is a steady flow of arrivals and departures at the hotels every day.
