CORFU. The wheelchairs help those with mobility problems to go into the sea, something that many people take for granted.

The main beach in Paleokastritsa was yesterday added to the beaches that are accessible to those with special needs with the installation of amphibious wheelchairs. The wheelchairs help those with mobility problems to go into the sea, something that many people take for granted. A special wooden ramp with railings was also constructed with the help of a local professional.

The Deputy Mayor for Social Policy Andreas Skoupouras announced the placement of two wheelchairs in Paleokastritsa by the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality. “The Municipal Authority plans to add another wheelchair in collaboration with the Corfu Regional Special Needs Association and to install a Seatrack system on the main beach for the first time.”

Mr. Skoupouras recently told Enimerosi that a total of 33 beaches from north to south will be accessible to people with mobility problems.

Infrastructure for those with special needs has also been installed on the Diapontia Islands, Othoni and Erikoussa, which are very much used by visitors. In addition, the Ionian Islands Regional Administration will provide four devices for the Municipalities on the island and there is provision from the Central Corfu Municipality for another six, creating conditions for easy and convenient access to the beach.
