CORFU. Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality and 6th Health Region working together to improve health centres.

At a meeting the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and 6th Health Region Director Yiannis Karvelis had today they called on the public to get vaccinated as the best way to deal with the pandemic.

Mr. Karvelis stressed that the new Corfu Mega vaccination centre is one of the most important projects the state has undertaken in collaboration with several other bodies to ensure that the majority of the local population is vaccinated.

"A team of 40 from the 6th Health Region came to Corfu on Sunday to staff the vaccination centre, working two shifts," said Mr. Karvelis. "Everyone involved is trying to get the message across that everyone should get vaccinated as soon as possible because this is our biggest weapon against the pandemic." He also thanked Meropi Ydraiou for her excellent cooperation.

The Mayor in turn said: "It is extremely important that everyone in the municipality and on the island get vaccinated quickly as this is our passport to return to normality in our lives. It is a matter of individual responsibility and collective consciousness to take this step which will lead to freedom." She added that vaccination was especial importance in Corfu, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations.

Vaccination programme

According to official statistics, the total number of vaccinations administered in Corfu is 57,110 (+1,195 on 29/5) of which 38,991 (+718 on 29/5) are the first shot and 21,789 (+745 on 29/5) are both shots.

From today there will be 10 vaccination streams at the Mega vaccination centre with the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine with a goal of 1,000 vaccinations per day. On the first day, today, there were 700 appointments.

Right from the start Corfu Hospital had the biggest load in the programme with 700 a day. Another 4 streams were added today to the 9 already existing thanks to the addition of the health team from The Smile of the Child.

At Corfu Health Centre things have been progressing satisfactorily with 250 - 280 Pfizer vaccinations a day. At Agios Markos Health Centre 60 - 70 AstraZeneca vaccinations a day are administered with just 10 - 15 of these being first shots.

Agios Athanasios Health Centre has been busy with approximately 290 Pfizer vaccinations a day. At Lefkimmi Health Centre, which began in April, there have been 2,500 vaccinations up to now (60 - 80 per day) and 1,000 appointments have been booked for June. South Corfu Deputy Mayor said that a second stream is being discussed with the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine.

"We are planning to change the AstraZeneca stream at Agios Markos Health Centre to Pfizer," said Mr. Karvelis, "so that one of the streams from Agios Athanasios can go there. This will save human resources and there will be better coordination of appointments."

Corfu Hospial Covid Unit under pressure

The Covid Unit at the hospital is under pressure with 22 patients in the Special Infectious Disease Unit, including an infant, and one elderly woman in the ICU. These are people who haven't been vaccinated, including some Covid-deniers!

Health Centre improvements

Ms. Ydraiou and Mr. Karvelis also announced that improvements are due to go ahead shortly at the health centres in the municipality with collaboration between Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands technical works department and the 6th Health Region. This will not only provide better quality health services to residents but also improve nursing facilities for both the public and the staff.
