ATHENS. The Greek Minister for Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierakakis gave a presentation of the new Certificate in Athens today.

On Friday, 28 May, the Digital Governance Minister Kyriakos Pierakakis presented the EU Digital COVID Certificate, which will be implemented by the EU from 1 July to facilitate travel by EU citizens. Present at the meeting were the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the President of the European Council Charles Michel and the Vice President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas

The Minister started by saying that the basic question had been how the Greek vaccination certificate, which was initially a medical document, could be transformed into a European certificate which could allow freedom of movement. "In order to end up with an agreement for a European certificate valid throughout the EU there was close cooperation between member states," said Mr. Pierakakis.

The Prime Minister described the digital certificate as "a fast lane for the facilitation of travel" and "a tool for fast travel" and thanked both Mr. Michel and Mr. Schinasfor the excellent cooperation between the EU and Greece. He stated that Greece is ready to activate the digital certificate earlier than July 1 and encouraged other countries to do the same.

European Council President Charles Michel congratulated Greece on its rapid implementation of the EU Digital Covid Certificate and that following negotiations, the EU will be able to implement it in the coming weeks. He said that the certificate was a major European achievement, and will guarantee the restoration of free movement for European citizens.
