ATHENS. Corfu MP Stefanos Gikas said that nurses and health visitors from various parts of the 6th Health Region will be coming. Health Director Yiannis Karvelis will be chairing a coordination meeting on Sunday 30 May.

On the initiative of Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas a meeting was held at the Ministry of Health with Deputy Minister Vassilis Kontozamanis and the 6th Health Region Director Yiannis Karvelis.

They discussed the new 'Mega' vaccination centre at Corfu National Sports Centre, the staffing of Corfu health centres with auxiliary nurses, the upcoming announcement of permanent National Health System doctors in Corfu and funding for a Regional surgery in Agios Mathaios in South Corfu.

Following the meeting, Stefanos Gikas said:

"I am, first of all, happy to announce that €50,000 has been released by the 6th Health Region to purchase a prefabricated building for the new Regional surgery in Agios Mathaios. This is a committment we made which is now being fulfilled!

We talked extensively today about the new 'Mega' vaccination centre at the National Sports Centre. As we have previously said, it will staffed by nurses and health visitors from various parts of the 6th Health Region. Today we can announce that there will be a total of 40 nurses and health visitors coming to Corfu. From 31 May, for three weeks, along with the private doctors from Corfu Medical Association, they will be the base for the successful operation of Corfu 'Mega' vaccination centre.

The 'Blue Freedom' project will begin in Corfu with 12 vaccination streams with the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine.

Yiannis Karvelis is coming to Corfu on Sunday 30 May to chair a coordination meeting with the doctors and nurses in preparation for the opening of the centre.

I was also informed that very shortly at least one additional nurse will be employed at each of Corfu's Health Centres.

Finally, I stressed the need for the appointment of new permanent National Health System doctors at Corfu Hospital. Last March 13 positions in Corfu were announced and there will be a new announcement for 600 doctors nationwide. These positions are expected to be advertised towards the end of June. Following the recommendations of Corfu Hospital Administration, I asked for these to include vital specialists at our hospital such as an orthopaedic, cardiologist, psychiatrist etc."
