CORFU. Because the tender process will take time it has been proposed that another boat be leased to serve the public from the beginning of June until mid-July.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipalty gave the green light for the hire of the boat 'Agios Stefanos' to operate a shuttle service to Vidos Island by a majority vote at a Council meeting yesterday.

The Councillor responsible for Vidos and Lazareto Islands and Voluntary Work Spyros Neratzis told Enimerosi that the public shuttle is expected to begin in mid-July.

However, because the tender process will take time it has been proposed that another boat be leased to serve the public from the beginning of June until mid-July, when the 'Agios Stefanos' will come into service.

Long-term lease

Mr. Neratzis said that the proposal to hire the 'Agios Stefanos' on a 3-year lease will be put to the Finance Committee in order to avoid the time-consuming procedures every year and better serve the public.

The shuttle service will have the same set-off point as last year at 'Korakofolia' and will run from 07:30 until 23:30. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, it is expected that there will be a small increase in the price of the ticket but will be free for municipal employees on duty, campers, residents of Corfu Municipal Old People's Home, those with large families, those with special needs and children under 12. There will be a 50% discount for regular visitors.

Clean-up and maintenance

The clean-up of the small island is expected to begin shortly and a destructor machine will be taken to the island as decided at a meeting attended by Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare Andreas Skoupouras, Deputy Mayor for Quality of Life, Everyday Issues and Civil Protection Theoharis Yiotis, Vice-President of Gouvia Camp Marinos Mikalef and Spyros Neratzis.

Creative occupation

The Creative Occupation Programme is expected to begin on 1 July and continue until 31 August. The matter is expected to be discussed at the next Municipal Council meeting but Mr. Neratzissaid that his party will probably put forward a proposal against the operation of the summer camps as the buildings are not in a suitable condition to accommodate children without repair work being carried out beforehand.
