Minister of Interior coming to Corfu for May 21st celebrations

CORFU. Minister of Interior Makis Voridis will be representing the Government at the 157th anniversary of the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece.

The visit was officially announced by the Prime Minister's General Secretary to Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality.

Anniversary Programme of Events:

Thursday 20 May

08:00 - Opening of celebrations with ringing of bells. Flags flown on municipal and public buildings, banks and shops until sunset on 21 May.

18:30 - Memorial service at Agia Triada Church, Garitsa for Archbishop Athanasios and other Corfiots involved in the unification. Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontia Islands will lay a wreath at the tomb of Archbishop Athanasios. Service at Platytera Monastery at the tomb of the first Governor of Modern Greece Ioannis Capodistrias with wreaths being laid by the Central Corfu Mayor and the Regional Governor.

21:15 - Streets, squares, municipal and public buildings, archaeological sites and monuments to be lit up.

Friday 21 May

08:00 - Raising of the flag at the Naval Base with an armed force detail.

11:30 - Service at Church of Agios Spyridon led by Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontia Islands.

12:00 - Presentation at the Ionian Parliament by Municipal Council President Dimitris Metallinos on the subject "1821 to 1864".

12:45 - Laying of wreaths at the Ionian Islands Unification Monument and one minute's silence in memory of those who fought for the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece.

20:00 - Lowering of the flag at the Naval Base with an armed force detail.

21:15 - Streets, squares, municipal and public buildings, archaeological sites and monuments to be lit up.

This year's events will observe all the necessary Covid-19 measures and attendance will be limited.
