CORFU. There was a fly over from Air Force fighter planes.

The celebratory events for the Anniversary of May 21, 1864, the day of the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece, were held earlier in Corfu this year due to the General Election on the 21st of the month.

Early in the morning, the Philharmonic Bands played marches in the streets of the town, and the flag was raised. This was followed by the official doxology at the Church of Agios Spyridon, led by the Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands, Nektarios.

At the ceremony held in the Old Ionian Parliament, the keynote speaker of the day was retired Lieutenant General Dr. Nikolaos K. Koukoumelis, a regular member of the Ionian Academy of 1808, who spoke on the topic: "Public Education in the Ionian State in the Struggle for Unity."

This was followed by a commemorative prayer and the laying of wreaths at the monument of the Unification of the Ionian Islands, as well as a minute's silence in memory of the Pioneers and Fighters of the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece.

The events culminated with the traditional parade on Agoniston Polytechniou Street, while at the same time, two fighter planes of the Hellenic Air Force honored the celebratory events with a fly over.

The Old, Mantzaros, Capodistrias and Korakiana philharmonic bands played and there was a parade with traditionally dressed groups, primary and secondary school pupils, Red Cross, Guides, Scouts and Armed Forces.
