Deputy Interior Minister attends 21 May celebrations

CORFU. The celebratory events for the 158th anniversary of the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece began on Friday 20 May.

On Friday there was a memorial service led by Archbishop Nektarios at Agia Triada Church, Garitsa for Archbishop Athanasios and other Corfiots involved in the unification.

This was followed by a service at Platytera Monastery at the tomb of the first Governor of Modern Greece Ioannis Capodistrias with wreaths being laid by the Central Corfu Mayor and the Regional Governor.



There was a concert at the Municipal Theatre on Friday night with the Ionian University Department of Music Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Quintet.

The government was represented at this year's anniversary celebrations by Deputy Minister for the Interior Stelios Petsas, who attended this morning's service at the Church of Agios Spyridon led by Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontia Islands.





This was followed by a presentation at the Ionian Parliament by historian Spyros Gaoutsis.



Befor the parade, wreaths were laid at the Ionian Islands Unification Monument and one minute's silence was observed in memory of those who fought for the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece.
