CORFU. The first cruise of the year will be calling at Corfu Port on Tuesday 18 May.

Up to now cruises have been on hold due to the pandemic.

According to Corfu Port Managing Director Spyros Zervopoulos, the Costa Luminosa will be arriving from Bari in Italy. The ship's capacity is 2,826 passengers and 1,050 crew.

The question remains, however, whether there will be demand due to the strict health protocols.

According to Corfu Port data, a total of 180 cruise ships are expected to arrive in Corfu during the period May - November 2021, which many consider encouraging in comparison with last year, when there were almost zero arrivals.

"After June," said Mr. Zervopoulos, "when there will be a 'wall' of immunity, there will be more arrivals. From July onwards we believe that things will be much busier."

He added that every Sunday Corfu will be a cruise home port, which will be beneficial for the island as cruises will begin and finish at Corfu Port. Tourists will spend more money in the local community than if it were simply a port of call as many of them will choose to stay here overnight.

"This will be of great benefit to Corfu," Mr Zervopoulos said, "as it is estimated that at the end of a cruise approximately 30% of passengers choose to spend an average of 5 nights at the port where they have disembarked, which is, of course, beneficial for the local community."
