CORFU. Mayor Kostas Lessis said: "We won΄t relax until the landfill area is assigned to South Corfu Municipality."

South Corfu local authority feels vindicated after the assurance of funding to clear the Lefkimmi landfill of the waste bales that have been there since 2018 when rubbish was taken to Mesorahia escorted by the riot police.

Mayor Kostas Lessis said, "We were happy to hear the announcement from Deputy Interior Minister Petsas regarding the provision of funds to the Ionian Islands Regional Administration by the Ministry of the Interior for the removal of the bales with residue from processed urban solid waste from South Corfu landfill.

The Municipality in collaboration with the Ionian Islands Regional Administration, the regional Solid Waste Management Organisation (FODSA) and the jointly responsible Ministries for the Interior and the Environment were able to get a practical response from the government regarding the issue which has been such a problem for our local community.

We have to recognise the tireless efforts of the General Secretary for Waste Management Mr. Grafakos in achieving this first step as well as the valuable contribution of Corfu MP Stefanos Gikas.

The unwavering assertive stance of the local authority and Mayor Kostas Lessis regarding the reconstruction of the Lefkimmi landfill has received a positive response from the government. The decision to provide funding for the removal of the wast bales is the first necessary step towards the environmental restoration of the area. We won΄t relax until the Prime Minister's declaration several months ago that the landfill area wil be assigned to South Corfu Municipality is implemented.

It gives the local authority great pleasure when its ongoing efforts for the benefit of the community bear fruit.

We wish you all a Happy Easter!"
