CORFU. There are various points of transmission and clusters - locally, in workplaces and indoors. This indicates there is a lot of exposure in indoor areas which aids transmission.

The data collected by the Central Corfu Covid Watch Committee shows a significant spike in cases in March. The number of cases more than doubled compared to February and the rate continues to increase.

The number of people admitted to the hospital Special Infectious Disease Unit also more than doubled and serious cases and deaths have been recorded. The positivity rate from tests conducted also continues to increase.

The cases are spread around the island but are mainly concentrated in Corfu Town and North Corfu. A detailed analysis of the Covid-19 situation in Corfu up to 31 March can be found here.

Over the last two months there has been a continuously increasing spread of the virus in Corfu. There are various points of transmission and clusters - locally, in workplaces and indoors. This indicates there is a lot of exposure in indoor areas which aids transmission. The greater spread of the virus is also conducive to transmission within families.

Exhaustion and complacency as regards adherence to safety measures lead to the spike in the pandemic. There is a high probability of the increase continuing and this calls for caution and regular adherence to the measures by members of the public as well as coordinated action on the part of the responsible authorities.

Everyone is reminded to avoid gatherings, especiially indoors, maintaining distances and the proper use of masks.

It is also extremely important that targetted contact tracing is carried out immediately and extensively even when there are small clusters in order to control the spread. The percentage of people who have been vaccinated is still low but the vaccination programme speeded up in March and is expected to speed up significantly in April.

The percentage of the Corfu population that has had at least the first vaccination shot is 9.5% compared to approximately 11% nationwide.

With a full vaccination programme approximately one third of the population can have received both vaccination shots by the end of June. Despite the fact that the programme has progressed slowly up to now, it seems to have had a positive effect limiting the number of serious cases and hospitalisations.

The progress of the vaccination programme is the way to control of the pandemic. At the same time, it is also important to observe the safety measures despite the exhaustion of so many members of the public and the authorities. We are going through what is probably the last strong wave of the pandemic, which is expected to recede by the beginning of summer on the condition that a significant proportion of the public adheres to the measures and aided by the higher number of those vaccinated.
