CORFU. Shortcomings in Corfu health services lead to patients being taken elsewhere on a daily basis.

This is not, of course, the first case but one of many cardiac cases that need to be transferred to Ioannina University Hospital due to the shortcomings in the health and ambulance services in Corfu.

On Tuesday morning it was considered necessary by Corfu Hospital Cardiology Department to transfer a 45-year-old man who had suffered a heart attack to Ioannina for an angiography, which cannot be done at Corfu Hospital.

Normally, patients are transferred by ambulance and the Corfu - Igoumenitsa ferry service but, according to sources in the health services, on this occasion an ambulance had already taken another patient to Ioannina and approval was not given for another ambulance to leave the island.

The only solution was for the patient to be taken to Igoumenitsa by Coastguard vessel accompanied by a doctor and for an ambulance from Ioannina to pick him up and take him to the University Hospital.
