Strict policing over the next two weeks

CORFU. On his visit to Corfu the Civil Protection Minister was not pleased with the Covid data from the 6th Health Region.

On his visit to Corfu on Friday Civil Protection Minister Michalis Chrisohoidis urged the regional and local police chiefs to ensure that the lockdown measures were strictly adhered to, especially in Corfu, where the situation was described as being more relaxed!

There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the information from 6th Health Region Director Karvelis that EODY data shows that 22% of the sample tests in Corfu and Zakynthos have been positive and in Lefkada, which had a stricter lockdown, the figure was 32%. It is not known what period of time these statistics, which were presented at yesterday's meeting, cover.

The second reason is the desire for the measures to prove effective over the next two weeks on the Greek islands so that tourism can begin there for Easter. And there is a lot of interest in the Ionian Islands from the British market.

The Minister announced that Corfu and Zakynthos will be getting 100 extra police - 50 on each island.

The discussions with the Minister covered all the burning issues - Covid cases, lockdown measures, checks, rapid and PCR tests and, of course, vaccination. The reason for slow progress in the vaccination programme was said to be probably due to the lack of sufficient vaccines rather than for any other reason.
