CORFU. Fewer cases and hospitalisations compared to November - Perseverance required to keep spread of virus in Corfu under control.
Central Corfu Covid Watch Committee has published its Covid-19 report for December.
The data shows that the spread of the virus has stabilised in Corfu in the first two weeks of December. The number of new cases and hospitalisations has decreased compared to November, when there was a spike in the spread of the virus. The Covid-19 report for Corfu up to 15 December can be seen on the Municipality website here.
When the general lockdown began the pandemic in Corfu was not at the same high level as other parts of Greece, especially the north. Consequently, we avoided the spike in the spread of the virus that was seen in those areas, even though there was a sharp increase in Corfu in early November. The stabilisation of the situation that exists now gives us the opportunity to draw conclusions and prepare for a possible third wave that may come in the winter.
It is extremely important that the spread of the virus in Corfu is kept at a controlled level as some measures are beginning to be relaxed and we are coming up to the festive period and the increase in socialising that it brings. This can be achieved by intensive contact tracing and isolation of cases at this time when the spread has eased off and before there is another wave.
The vaccination programme will be starting soon in the EU, including this country. The Covid-19 vaccinations are expected to play a decisive role in controlling the pandemic.
Nevertheless, the results of this programme will begin to show at the end of the winter as a significant proportion of the population will need to be vaccinated, especially those in vulnerable groups, for the spread of the virus to be halted without restrictive measures. Up until that time, special effort and patience will be required in order to limit the effects of a possible third wave.
Epidemiological data
The Central Corfu Covid Watch Committee continues to monitor the development of the pandemic on a local level in real time and on a daily basis. Today's report is an update of the previous report published on 18 November.
The Committee has recorded 322 confirmed Covid-19 cases amongst Corfu permanent residents and 109 cases from visitors since the outbreak of the pandemic until 15 December.
In total, 64 patients were hospitalised (19.9% of the total number of cases). There have been 8 deaths of permanent residents - 2 in the first wave and 6 in the second wave. There was also one death of a Ioannina patient who was hospitalised in Corfu and 3 foreign visitors - 2 in Corfu Hospital and 1 after being transported back to Germany.
Confirmed cases are considered to be those that had been diagnosed with the PCR method at SARS-CoV-2 labs and are regularly reported to EODY. These labs exist in Corfu both at the hospital and at private clinics. To these are added those that are traced by sample tests conducted by EODY mobile units in Corfu and are then sent to Athens.
