ATHENS. Measures for the festive period have been announced - Churches open on Christmas Day and Epiphany with 9 people allowed in churches and 25 in Metropolitan churches - Curfew from 22:00.

Government spokesperson Stelios Petsas announced the measures for the festive period along with Development Minister Adonis Georgiades.

"The numbers of new cases is not going down, pressure is not being taken off the hospitals and we can't proceed with reopening the way we would have wanted."

"Despite the fact that it is five weeks since the second lockdown began, there is still a heavy epidemiological burden in the country.

On a national level the number of cases remains high. Most of them - per 100,000 population - are in the regions of Pieria, Drama, Kilkis, Pellas, Xanthi, Imathia, Thessaloniki, Larissa and Florina. The situation in West Attica, based on the 7-day period, is also of great concern.

The pressure on public hospitals remains heavy, especially in ICUs - nationwide 83% of beds are occupied, 77% in Attica and 91% in Thessaloniki," said Mr. Petsas.

Based on these facts, the following measures were announced:

1. Retail businesses will remain closed throughout the country. Given that couriers are overburdened and will not be able to handle the increased demand, exceptionally from Sunday 13 December until Thursday 7 January customers will be allowed to go to shops to pick up orders (click-away). Further details will be announced by Development Minister Adonis Georgiades.

2. Hair salons will open nationwide from Monday 14 December and will be allowed to extend their opening hours from 07:00 to 21:00. They will operate only by appointment in order to avoid people gathering and health protocols will be strictly observed.

3. Bookshops will open nationwide from Monday 14 December and will be allowed to extend their opening hours. A maximum of 4 customers will be allowed at the same time in shops up to 100 sq. metres and 1 customer per 15 sq. metres in shops over 100 sq. metres.

4. Churches will be open on Christmas Day and Epiphany only. On these days up to 9 people will be allowed to attend in ordinary churches and up to 25 in Metropolitan churches nationwide. The responsibility for adherence to the measures will lie with the local Archbishops and the Athens Archbishopric. For the Epiphany celebration blessing of the waters will not be allowed in open public spaces.

5. There will be a curfew from 22:00 until 05:00 from Sunday 13 December until Thursday 7 January and SMS will need to be sent to 13033 for necessary movements. Travel to retail shops, hair salons and bookshops as mentioned above will be in Category 2.

The amount of time that travellers arriving in Greece from abroad between 18 December and 7 January have to remain in isolation is reduced from 10 to 3 days.
