CORFU. According to the Central Corfu Covid Watch Committee report the situation began to stabilise in the last week of November - The number of new cases in November was double that of the whole period up to then.

The COVID-19 data collected by the Central Corfu Municipal Covid Watch Committee shows a relative stabilisation in the number of new cases appearing in the Corfu population in the last week of November.

There was a great increase in the number of recorded cases in the first three weeks of the month and the number in the whole of November was double that for the whole of the period from the outbreak of the pandemic until 31 October.

The number of hospital admissions has also been gradually decreasing throughout the month - relieving the pressure on Corfu General Hospital. There were 34 Covid-19 admissions in November and 6 deaths.

An analytical report of the Covid-19 epidemiological situation in Corfu up to 30 November has been posted on the Municipality website.

The relative stabilisation is clearly a result of the general lockdown which began when Corfu was at an earlier stage of the epidemiological wave than other parts of the country. The island thus avoided the dramatic spike that was seen in other areas, mainly in the north of Greece.

Nevertheless, the available data indicates a temporary stabilisation and not a decrease in the pandemic. The spread of the virus amongst the island's population is continuing and at a much higher rate than at the beginning of the autumn.

With the planned gradual removal of strict measures it will be critical not to allow the spread of the virus to increase again. This will require special efforts from the responsible authorities and the public as we are entering the period with outbreaks of viruses - the winter months - and an increase in mobility due to the festivities.

As has been pointed out in previous reports and press releases, the development of the pandemic in Corfu and the rest of the country demonstrates that it cannot be controlled by the central EODY and Civil Protection authorities in Athens alone. It can be seen that the systematic contact tracing, recommendations to isolate, protection of indoor spaces and health facilities, mass testing of the population cannot be effective without support and coordination on a local level.

Consequently, the coordination of local powers and resources is essential in order to limit as much as possible the effects of a possible third wave during the winter.

We reiterate the need to acquire a large number of rapid tests on a local level so that EODY and hospital mobile units can conduct free tests.

We also repreat the need for the coordination of information sharing amongst those involved in managing the pandemic in Corfu.
