ATHENS. Professor Tsiodras says the pressure on the National Health System is unbearable - Over 9% positive results from PCR tests.

Professor Sotiris Tsiodras presented the epidemiological data for the pandemic in Greece.

"We have never in modern history had so many patients hospitalised in ICUs for a virus that leads to pneumonia," he said and stated that over 170 people a day are admitted to hospital , which puts unbearable pressure on the National Health System. He added that "More people are being admitted to hospital than are being discharged."

Prefessor Tsiodras said that males are affected by the virus more seriously and pointed out that yesterday, Thursday, saw the highest number of daily deaths. He added that most of the deaths are of people over 75 years of age.

He said that the spike in the virus led the committee to recommend a lockdown and added that the spread is increasing exponentially and the number of daily cases is now at 1,679.

According to the Professor, the data shows that there has been a significant increase in the probability of people over 65 being infected with the virus. Over the last few days over 1,000 people over 65 have been infected daily.

From 10 September, he said, the number of tests being carried out has increased with approximately 19,000 PCR tests per day and over 9% of the results are positive.

With regard to ICU beds, the head of the committee of experts said that capacity has increased in Attica and Thessaloniki. 66% of the ICU capacity for Covid-19 in Attica has been used and 78% in Thessaloniki.

According to Professor Tsiodras, the use of masks plays a significant role in the fight against the virus and it is estimated that it prevents hundreds of thousands of deaths until a vaccine is produced.

He talked about fake news and said that it leads to the acceptance of false facts and influences people's behaviour.

In conclusion, he stated that the committee meets frequently and the lockdown decision was unanimous. "We understand the consequences and hope that they will be temporary," he added.
