CORFU. Two elderly women were transferred from Ioannina to Corfu Hospital to relieve the pressure from the public hospitals in Ioannina - 9 patients in Corfu Special Infectious Diseases Unit and 1 in ICU.

It appears that Corfu Hospital is being deployed to relieve the pressure on health facilities in Ioannina due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Epirus.

Two elderly women have already been transferred to Corfu from Ioannina University Hospital and it is not unlikely that others will follow if deemed necessary by the 6th Regional Health District. As yet, however, there is no word of other patients being transferred.

The pressure on health system in Epirus can be seen by the fact that there are 5 patients hospitalised in Ioannina University Hospital ICU - the highest number since the outbreak of the pandemic.

According to the Director of the 6th Regional Health District Yiannis Karvelis, the University Hospital ICU has 8 beds - so 3 are still available. He added, however, that there a possibility of a second unit being created immediately, thus providing a further 8 beds.

Corfu Hospital, which seems to be fulfilling the role of a 'release valve' for Ioannina, has 9 patients in the Special Infectious Diseases Unit at the moment and one in the ICU - the priest from North Corfu.
