(CGTN Europe). European Union health officials have warned a surge in coronavirus cases in Europe risks becoming a deadly double epidemic of flu and coronavirus infections, with EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides saying in "some member states, the situation is now even worse than during the peak in March."

- On Thursday Britain reported its highest number of daily new cases of 6,634. The previous high was recorded in March when the UK only tested those in a hospital setting.

- France reported record figures for daily cases on Thursday – 16,096, up from 13,498 on Wednesday – while the number of people hospitalized passed 6,000 for the first time in over two months.

- United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres warned the international community that if the climate crisis was approached with the "same disunity and disarray" as the coronavirus, then "I fear the worst."

- Ireland has removed Germany, Poland and Lithuania from its travel "green list," with only four countries now exempt from its 14-day quarantine for arrivals.

- France's prime minister Jean Castex said that if the government does not act quickly to prevent the virus' spread, "we could find ourselves in a situation similar to spring."

- Poland and Slovakia have reported record daily figures of new cases – 1,578 and 419 respectively.

- Spain's total tally of confirmed infections has passed 700,000 as the government warned of difficult times ahead for the virus hotspot of Madrid.

- The UK's national debt hit a record $2.581 trillion at the end of August, with the government borrowing $45.7 billion last month in a bid to fight the economic fallout from the virus.

- Europe's top aviation safety regulator said the risks of air travelers contracting the virus on a passenger aircraft are "very marginal" provided health measures are applied.
