CORFU. Initiatives for European Mobility Week (16 - 22 September) - Cyle rides, town walks and special offers from KTEL bus company.
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality is taking part in World Car-Free Day, which is part of European Mobility Week (16 - 22 September).
The European Union is encouraging member-states to create initiatives that promote sustainable mobility through the use of environmentally-friendly means of transport.
The theme of this year's European Mobility Week is 'Zero-emission mobility for all' with the slogan 'Move responsibly!' - encouraging the use of the most sustainable forms of transport, walking, cycling and public transport.
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands is taking an active part and has contributed to sustainable urban mobility with the completion of pedestrian areas accessible to those with special needs in July 2020.
The Municipality is also organising the following:
A1 - Car-free day with only pedestrians, cyclists and public transport in the following areas:
- Corfu Town historical centre, where the area bordered by Ioannou Theotoki St. and Alexandras Ave. will be closed to vehicular traffic
- The shore road from Nautilus along Dimokratias Ave, Agoniston Polytechnio, Eleftherias Arseniou, Danzelot etc.
Car-free day will be on Sunday 20 September from 09:00 to 14:00.
In collaboration with the Traffic Police the necessary measures will be taken to regulate traffic and avoid any accidents. Residents in the aforementioned areas are asked to show understanding, not to make any unnecessary journeys and to remove their cars from the area during the car-free hours.
A2 - On Sunday 20 September from 09:00 to 14:00 bikes will be freely available to residents (first come, first served) for a short cycle run. The set-off point will be San Giacomo Old Town Hall.
B - On the same day and the same times Corfu Urban Bus Service will offer the following on all its routes:
- Free travel for pupils (with pupil IDs)
- 50% off fares in order to encourage people to use public transport.
C - As part of European Mobility Week, to encourage people to walk and at the same time enjoy the cultural heritage and sights, Coru Tour Guides Association will be offering guided tours in Corfu Town.
The use of masks is mandatory for those taking part.
The guided tour will take place on Saturday 19 September starting at 18:00. The meet-uo point is the entrance to the Old Fortress.
D - The Primary Education Department will be organising an art exhibition which will open on 20 October with works produced by pupils by 16 October.
Let's all think about the available means to move around and choose the best and shortest route.
By making smart mobility choices we can save money, improve our health and help the environment.
