(CGTN Europe). The head of Ireland΄s COVID-19 modelling group has said that "case numbers appear to be growing exponentially and are likely to double every 10 to 14 days if every one of us does not immediately act to break chains of transmission of the virus."

- The UK recorded nearly 4,000 new cases on Wednesday, its highest one-day number since 8 May. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he wants to boost testing to 500,000 a day (roughly double the current level) by the end of October to avoid a second national lockdown.

- Restrictions have been tightened for almost two million people in England's North East region, with pubs closing earlier and limits on households mixing. The measures have been described as necessary to prevent a "damaging full lockdown.'

- Russia's COVID-19 death toll passed 19,000 on Thursday, with 144 new deaths in the previous 24 hours taking the total to 19,061. In addition, 5,762 new cases take the tally to 1,085,281, the world's fourth-highest caseload.

- Germany has added Austria's capital Vienna and Hungary's capital Budapest to its pandemic risk list due to the rising number of coronavirus infections there, authorities said on Wednesday. Germany also added the French region Hauts-de-France and Swiss canton Fribourg to the list.

-  For the first time, Czechia has reported more than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases in a single day. The health ministry will ban stand-up indoor events from Friday evening, including limiting bars and restaurants to their seating capacity.

- Ukraine set a daily record with 3,584 new coronavirus infections, the national security council said on Thursday – up from a previous peak of 3,144 on 11 September. Ukraine has a total of 166,244 cases, with 3,400 deaths.

- The number of French people treated in intensive care units for COVID-19 rose for the 20th straight day on Wednesday to a three-month high of 803, while the number of new daily cases was the third highest on record.

- The Madrid region is planning to announce restrictions on movement on Friday that could include targeted lockdowns in virus hotspots, a senior official said, as the country's infections surged again. A third of Spain's active cases are in its capital: of the country's 4,728 new infections registered on Wednesday, 1,854 were in Madrid.
