ATHENS. Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias gave his weekly update on coronavirus in Greece today.

Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias said that since 1 August there have been 961 new confirmed cases, which led to the Government's decision yesterday to impose additional measures to halt the increase in cases.

The Deputy Minister detailed the new measures and clarified that the PCR test for arrivals doesn't apply to children up to 10 years of age. He added that from 16 August whoever enters the country from Albania will have to go into quarantine for 7 days.

As regards the new limit on the opening hours for catering establishments and night clubs, he warned that there will be a €10,000 fine for those that don't close at midnight - and second offences will lead to temporary closure of the business for 20 days.

Mr. Hardalias clarified that the measure applies to catering businesses, those selling drinks and food, catering, social event venues (e.g. weddings) and those that organise recreational events. Exceptions are delivery and take-away services from catering establishments.

Imported cases

Between 1 July and 10 August there were 266,116 PCR tests for 2,162,251 travellers coming into the country and 508 postive cases were discovered. 164 of these are still active, 243 have returned to their home country and 101 have recovered and are still in Greece.

Limited number of entries into country and mandatory tests

From 16 August there will be a limit on the number of people allowed to enter the country via Kakavia. A maximum of 750 people a day will be allowed to enter. Anyone entering the country from Albania will have to go into quarantine for 7 days.

From 17 August a negative PCR test from up to 72 hours prior to arrival will also be required for all travellers arriving via land borders. This includes Greek citizens and those with residency permits. The test must be taken in the country of origin, not Greece. This measure does not apply to children up to 10 years of age.

Parts of the country where restaurants and bars must close at midnight

Based on epidemiological data, it has been decided that from 11 - 23 August catering establishments are prohibited from operating between 12 midnight and 7a.m. in the following areas:

- Crete, Eastern Macedonia & Thrace
- Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Larissa and Corfu
- Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, Volos, Katerini, Rhodes, Antiparos, Zakynthos and Kos

This measures may be extended to other areas depending on the ongoing epidemiological data.

All events throughout Greece in which participants are standing are prohibited, including concerts and other performances. At performances with seated audiences the health protocols must be adhered to.
