CORFU. Guards thwarted an attempt to escape from Corfu Prison by a long-term prisoner.

Corfu Prison Officers' Union announced that the escape attempt happened on Thursday during the prisoner's exercise period. He violently attacked the guards and the Head Officer when they captured him.

According to the statement, the prisoner was observed to be behaving suspiciously and a search of his cell in K Wing was conducted which revealed the following objects:

- an improvised rope ladder
- an improvised hook
- 5 improvised skewers
- a broken fan mechanism
- an improvised digging tool
- improvised scaffolding made from three wooden cell doors

With the help of other inmates the prisoner prepared to escape during his exercise period by exploiting the fact that the first floor on the K Wing is kept closed by decision of the Archaeological Services.

Prison overcrowding

In its statement the Union said: "For a long time now the prison service has been requesting that the inmate in question be transferred to another prison along with other inmates for security reasons as the facility is overcrowded.

When the prisoner was captured he violently attacked the guards and the Head Officer himself.

We would like to congratulate our colleagues for successfully thwarting the attempt and, despite the difficult daily work conditions, once again fulfilled their demanding duty.

The matter is in the hands of the Justice Department and the responsible Prosecutor."
