CORFU. "There appears to be a clear intent to undermine tourism on the island."

Following recent comments and posts, the Deputy Mayor for Tourism Panayiotis Varouchas said that the island has a positive image and that the situation is under control. "In the last few hours there has been inaccurate and fake news saying that Corfu will be put in lockdown, which shows a clear intent to undermine tourism on the island. I would just like to categorically deny these irresponsible rumours and stress that the Municipality and Tourism Department has heard of no such decision or received any such indication from the national authorities.

At the moment Corfu has a very positive image and I must stress that our Municipality is adhering to all the necessary measures and continues to clean and disinfect roads, public areas and buildings. According to the information that we have, the few imported cases are in the quarantine hotel and the others are under control.

It is therefore clear that, at this point in time, the circumstances are not such as would lead to extra measures being imposed. This would be a decision for the Civil Protection Ministry and the Infectious Diseases Committee - and there is no such decision.

Finally, I want to underline that health and safety is a matter for all of us and the Municipality has taken on its share of responsibility.

It is a matter of responsibility to the community, the island and tourism to adhere to the health measures and ignore fake news."
