ATHENS. The Civil Protection Minister made it clear that, "We will take all the necessary legal measures to ensure that public health is not threatened by misinformation or conspiracy theories spreading on the internet."
Following orders from the Civil Protection Minister Michalis Chrysohoidis the Cyber Crime Agency has sent online material against the implementation of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus to the Public Prosecutor.
The material, which was published on small sites and posted on social media, says that COVID-19 is essentially a "myth" and amongst other things encourages people to refuse to pay fines for not adhering to the measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
The Prosecutor will examine the material and assess whether an investigation should be ordered.
"We will take all the necessary legal measures to ensure that public health is not threatened by misinformation or conspiracy theories spreading on the internet," said Mr. Chrysohoidis and added that coronavirus "is not a matter regarding which disobedience should be encouraged and conspiracy theories put forward."
"Our actions must be governed by responsibility and awareness of the consequences on our fellow citizens," he stressed. "The State will not permit the endangerment of public health by irresponsible social behaviour."
