ATHENS. Government spokesperson Stelios Petsas made the announcement following a teleconference with the PM - Land workers who have gone abroad will not be allowed back into the country until 15 August.
The Government spokesperson said that complacency remains the enemy, along with the phenomena of relaxation of self- protection measures.
At his regular press briefing he said that, following the teleconference with the PM about coronavirus, it has been decided to extend the mandatory wearing of face masks to the outdoor areas of passenger ferries, as well as their interior, starting from Tuesday, August 4 until August 18.
He said that it was critical that people adhere to this measure in order to avoid taking drastic measures to reduce the maximum number of passengers allowed on board.
Moreover, until August 15, land workers that leave the country will be not have the right to re-enter until further notice.
Mr. Petsas also referred to the measures that were announced on Friday including the mandatory use of masks in enclosed spaces. Commenting on a decision to ban the admission into clubs of standing customers without a table, he noted that the government had compensated with "counter-measures" by extending the government-supported staff furlough programme to support workers and businesses with reduced turnover.
He said that Greece is in a better epidemiological position than most European countries and managed to control the imported incidents from tourists with a series of measures at the country's entry points. He underlined that complacency has led to the increase in cases in many Greek regions - mostly in the cities - but this increase has not put significant pressure on the health system so far.
The Government spokesperson said that the land entry points are the main source of concern, where Greeks and those with residency permits enter the country, along with public transport, social gatherings and recreation.
Mr. Petsas announced that the government will be holding video conferences chaired by the Prime Minister three times a week, starting on Monday, to monitor the progress of COVID-19 in Greece, with the participation of the heads of Health and Civil Protection.
He also announced that inspections and checks will continue and added that checks were carried out throughout the country between 31 July and 2 August by teams from the Ministry of Development & Investment, the Coast Guard, the Hellenic Police and Municipal Police.
6,610 inspections were carried out and 434 violations discovered. 494 fines were imposed totalling 231,500 Euros and businesses were suspended for a total of 195 days.
