Medical Examiner says young girl in Avliotes took in a lot of water

CORFU. The autopsy showed aspiration of a large amount of water in the young girl΄s lungs.

The Medical Examiner Ioannis Aivatidis completed the autopsy this afternoon on the young girl who lost her life at Agios Stefanos beach in Avliotes on Tuesday evening.

Ioannis Aivatidis told Enimerosi that the autopsy clearly confirmed that the girl died from drowning. He said that there had been aspiration of a large amount of water in the her lungs.

The Medical Examiner also said that the girl had eaten a large amount of food not long before the accident. However the cause of death was that she had "swallowed a lot of water".

The Coast Guard issued an official statement earlier:

"A 14-year-old girl was pulled out of the sea unconscious in Agios Stefanos, Corfu yesterday evening.

The 14-year-old girl was taken to Corfu General Hospital where death was confirmed.

The Paleokastritsa Division of Corfu Central Port Authority, which is conducting the investigation, ordered an autopsy."
