- Thousands of protesters gathered in Serbia's capital Belgrade to protest against the new measures put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. The protests come days after Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic announced a weekend curfew for its citizens.

- The Netherlands has shut its borders to people from Serbia and Montenegro on Wednesday, just a week after opening them, citing a rapid rise in new infections in both countries.

- The UK government has offered restaurants a 50 percent return on meals eaten in August up to the value of £10 as part of its recovery plan. It has also announced a reduction on VAT, stamp duty and a bonus for employers re-employing furloughed staff.

- France's new prime minister, Jean Castex, has said that any new lockdown will be targeted and not imposed nationwide, even if there is a second wave of infections.

- London's National Gallery is to reopen to visitors on Wednesday, almost four months after it was forced to shut its doors.

- The World Health Organization has acknowledged the evidence emerging on the airborne transmission of COVID-19 after a group of scientists concluded the virus could spread far beyond two meters.

- Germany's daily cases rose by 397 in the past 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total to 197,341. There were 12 fatalities recorded on Tuesday.


- Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte admits he won't accept a weak compromise on the EU COVID-19 recovery fund. EU leaders still have to agree on any recovery package, but Conte says: "The response has to be a strong, ambitious political response."

- Denmark has withdrawn as the host of next year's Artistic Gymnastics World Championships due to the economic impact of COVID-19. The competition, in its 50th year, was set to take place in the Danish capital Copenhagen from 18-24 October 2021, but now organizers have to find an alternative host country.
