Vidos Island needs a lot of work and money

CORFU. The long-term neglect and the destruction of infrastructure make it impossible to license the summer camps under present conditions.

There was a huge contrast with the IKOS restaurant which opens next week with assurances that it will open to everyone!

Vidos Island is like a wilderness. Abandoned buildings which have collapsed. Stones and rocks lying around, all the networks damaged, benches broken and the contractor for the necessary repairs has too small a team. This was the scene that greeted the temporary board members of the newly-established Vidos protection organisation when they visted the island at the weekend.

Vice-President and former Regional Governor Stefanos Poulimenos told Enimerosi that their conclusion was that the small island requires a comprehensive programme and generous funding. This would mean a proper study being conducted and an application to join a funding programme.

It may be the case that there will be no summer camps due to coronavirus and the inability to implement the strict health protocols, said Mr. Poulimenos, but the truth of the matter is that the camp would not have been able to receive permission this year anyway. Everything is in a derelict condition after years of abandonment and the contractor's team and volunteers are not enough to properly carry out repairs. It's not just the buildings, where the roofs have collapsed, it's also the fire safety facilities and the water supply and electricity networks which need extensive work done along with the paths, the beaches...almost everything!

The Organisation's board members headed by former Corfu Mayor Yiannis Kourkoulos also saw the preparations at the restaurant and canteen operated by IKOS since last year. The supervisor Mr. Spanos assured them that the facilities will be open to everybody - in an effort to refute all that was said and written last year about it being a private island!

It remains to be seen in practice if local and visitors will be able to come and visit this lovely little island.

It was worth noting the difference between the number of Municipal workers involved in restoring the island and the number working to prepare the restaurant for IKOS - the latter was much greater!
