CORFU. Central Corfu Municipal Tourism Department is reopening the kiosks and will also be providing visitor information using other modern methods.
Following a number of years, Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality has reopened the Tourist Information kiosks in San Rocco Square and at the entrance to the Old Fortress. The kiosks have been improved and will provide information for visitors as well as promote the island.
Deputy Mayor for Tourism Panayiotis Varouchas said that the poor or non-existent provision of information by the kiosks in San Rocco and the Old Fortress is now a thing of the past and expressed his satisfaction that they were open and properly functional again. Mr. Varouchas also thanked the Municipal Everyday Services for the necessary work they carried out to allow the kiosks to reopen. Repair and maintenance work was carried out along with the placing of new signs.
The kiosk in San Rocco Square is opening today with a Municipal employee and from next week will be manned by volunteer guides following an agreement between the Tourist Department and the Tourist Guides' Union.
Modern provision of visitor information
The Deputy Mayor said that these kiosks are essential but they aren't enough in this age of fast dissemination of information. For this reason, a system is being designed with special QR Codes which will be placed at various locations around town, at the island's points of entry and on public transport so that visitors can obtain information quickly and easily and in the most up-to-date way possible. Mr. Varouchas added that social media would naturally be used for promotion.
They will also be working with the department that is creating the new Municipal website so that there will be a special tourist section with comprehensive information. The website is expected to be ready in the next few days.
