19 Jun 2020 / 09:13

CORFU. Information from Corfu Astronomical Society about three phenomena this coming Sunday.

There will be three astronomical phenomena on Sunday 21 June:

Summer solstice at 00:43 early on Sunday morning, signalling the beginning of summer.

New moon at 09:42

Annular solar eclipse in parts of Africa and Asia which will be visible to us as a partial solar eclipse.

In Corfu the eclipse will begin at approximately 07:57 and end at 09:04. For us the maximum will be a 13% eclipse at 08:30.

WARNING!!!

The eclipse should only be observed using special filters as described by astrovox here.

Great care must be taken not to observe the eclipse without special filters even when just looking with the naked eye. There is a serious risk of damage to the eyes.

DO NOT OBSERVE THE ECLIPSE WITHOUT SPECIAL FILTERS!

Due to COVID-19 Corfu Astronomical Society will not be organising anything. Members of the Society's observation and astrophotography group will be photographing the various phases of the eclipse and will post them online.
