CORFU. On Friday night, 27th July, we have the opportunity to see the total lunar eclipse in Greece.

The time of the eclipse on Friday night is ideal for an unimpeded view. At 1 hour 43 minutes it will be the longest eclipse this century and and both the partial and total eclipse will be visible for the full duration in Greece. The main phenomenon, when the moon enters the Earth's shadow, will begin at 21:24 local time - at a height of approximately 5 degrees as the moonrise will have begun at 20:49. Prior to that is the penumbral eclipse, which is invisible to the naked eye at first but gradually becomes visible as it approaches partial eclipse.

Throughout the total eclipse the moon will be in the south-east sky going from 17 degrees initially to a maximum of 28 degrees at the end of the eclipse. Observers should ensure they have free sight to the south-east in order to see the whole process - especially at the beginning of the partial eclipse when the moon will be at a low point.

The exact times are as follows:

20:14 - Penumbral eclipse begins (moon isn't above horizon yet)
20:49 - Moonrise (for Corfu)
21:24 - Partial eclipse begins
22:30 - Total eclipse begins
23:21 - Maximum eclipse
00:13 - Total eclipse ends
01:19 - Partial eclipse ends
02:28 - Penumbral eclipse ends

Corfu Astronomy Society is organizing an observation of the total lunar eclipse with a telescope at the Aktaion on Friday 27th July from 21:00.

If there is rain, the observation will not go ahead.
