CORFU. The phenomenon is not expected to last more than 15 seconds.

(Corfu Astronomical Society) An extremely rare event. The occultation of Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis), the ninth brightest star in the sky, is set to occur on 12.12.23 (Monday night to Tuesday) at 03:12, by the asteroid (319) Leona.

Through this occultation, astronomers hope to learn more about Betelgeuse and Leona.

The phenomenon is not expected to last more than 15 seconds. It will be visible along a path a few kilometres wide, where a total occultation can occur, and it will be visible to the naked eye.

This path also passes over Corfu. For this reason, Dr. Apostolos Christou, a researcher of small Solar-System bodies at Armagh Observatory, is on our island. The observation and astrophotography team of Corfu Astronomical Society will attempt, weather permitting, to record the phenomenon!
