ATHENS. Sotiris Tsiodras presented detailed epidemiological data for the pandemic in Greece at the first meeting of a series of online discussions as part of the Greek Chairmanship of the Council of Europe.

"The main message is 'solidarity'. Saying no to fear, panic and sstigmatising. We are fighting coronavirus together and we will win."

With these words Sotiris Tsiodras concluded his presentation at his first appearance after his emotional 'farewell' to the daily coronavirus updates on television.

Addressing all European citizens at the first meeting of a series of online discussions as part of the Greek Chairmanship of the Council of Europe, he presented detailed epidemiological data for the pandemic in Greece and gave an account of the battle with coronavirus over the last few months.

He referred to the difficulty in acquiring personal protective equipment at the early stages of the pandemic and pointed out that prices were five times the normal and there was no sense of solidarity, with some countries obstructing others from obtaining equipment.

He also talked about the coronavirus tests saying that during the early stages of the pandemic in Greece there was only the ability to carry out 800 tests a day whereas now up to 10,000 can be carried out.

Regarding the lockdown measures, he stressed that they prevented the health system from being overloaded as only 2.6 ICU beds per 100,000 population were used.

He considered the discovery of a vaccine to be extremely important, but on condition that it will be accepted and that what happened during the pandemic in 2009, when very few were vaccinated, doesn't repeat itself.

As regards the spread of the infection he said that the R Value on Sunday was just 0.3.
