ATHENS. Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias - The spread of the virus may have been reduced but the virus is still here and there is no vaccine or effective treatment yet.

Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias said that our success in the first phase has allowed us to proceed to the next stage. He added that the spread of the virus may have been reduced but the virus is still here and there is no vaccine or effective treatment yet.

The lockdown measures remain in place until 4 May and Mr. Hardalias called on the trade unions and political groups not to hold gatherings for May Day. He said that any gatherings on May Day this year "could put people's lives in danger" and he asked them to respect the battles being fought by doctors, nurses and patients.

He also stressed that any movement far from permanent residences is not allowed and police checks will still be carried out up to and including Sunday 3 May and fines will be imposed for violations.

The Deputy Minister said that over the last two days another 6 flights had arrived in Greece from abroad with a total of 514 passengers. They were all checked and 9 of them tested positive for coronavirus.

Where the use of a mask will be compulsory

Masks will be compulsory on public transport for both employees and passengers. It will also be compulsory for staff, customers and visitors in supermarkets, food shops, beauty centres, hairdressers and barbers, diagnostic labs and hospitals.

Violations will be fined 150 Euros.

"The virus is still here and our main weapon is individual responsibility," said Nikos Hardalias. "This is an unprecedented situation." He added that some areas may need to go into quarantine again if there is a relapse regarding the number of cases and if it is deemed necessary.

He stressed that the basic weapons are social distancing, antiseptic, hand washing and the use of masks in enclosed spaces.
