ATHENS. "It may seem illogical that we are now saying they should be used and not long ago we said something different," Prof. Tsiodras said."But conditions are different now."

The professor of infectious diseases Sotiris Tsiodras explained why the use of protective masks is necessary now and why the Ministry of Health has made their use compulsory in certain places.

Prof. Tsiodras said that we have survived but not without casualties and losses. He talked about behaving calmly even though this will be very difficult and said that regarding masks it may seem illogical that we are now saying they should be used and not long ago we said something different. "At that time we were under lockdown," he said. "And the lockdown was sufficient. However, conditions are now different. The use of masks will be a complementary protective measure against coronavirus and the major organisations support our strategy. There can never be unanimity on such issues but now that there will be more interactions between people and uncertainty it is a matter of good sense."

Prof. Tsiodras made it clear that the use of masks will be "an additional measure against the virus - not to prevent us from catching it but to prevent us from transmitting it."

Sotiris Tsiodras also clarified that we aren't talking about surgical masks but simple masks that people can even make at home with simple materials. He said it was important how we handled the mask and not to touch the front. Social distancing and hand hygiene are the main measures and these are what got us through the crisis.

In conclusion, he said that children are usually infected in their family environment and it is unusual for a child to be infected with coronavirus by an adult. He also stressed that it is very important for children to be able to return to normality.
