ATHENS. Prof. Sotiris Tsiodras from EODY provided clarification regarding the usefulness of disposable gloves and masks during the daily update on COVID-19 in Greece.
Prof. Tsiodras said: "There is little evidence that disposable gloves really provide protection against being infected by the virus," and added that "The indiscriminate use of disposable gloves can do more harm than good."
The Professor of Infectious Diseases stated that the World Health Organisation doesn't recommend the use of disposable gloves by members of the public as they can very easily tear leading to danger of infection due to possible hand contact with the face.
"We should stop using disposable gloves for outdoor activities. We should wash our hands with soap and water or with antiseptic when we come back from the supermarket, chemists or after using public transport," Prof. Tsiodras said.
He also said that the general use of face masks is not recommended at the moment.
The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Greece now stands at 1,955 with 71 new cases today, 57 of whom are males. There were 3 deaths today, taking the total to 86.
23 of those who have died were females. 79 patients remain intubated and 16 have been discharged from ICUs.
30% of those who have tested positive for COVID-19 are in the age group 18-39, 35% are 40-59 and 21% 65 and older.
